A few hours on a bus brought us to Seward, AK. It used to be a bigger port until the Good Friday earthquake in 1964. Today it’s very popular for fishing and sightseeing.
We hiked up to Exit Glacier. The glacier has been in full retreat since its extent in 1815. The picture with Susannah is it’s extent in 2005
The Yukon in Seward is pretty famous. There’s a bunch of stories about why people stick dollar bills on the ceiling. My favorite story is when the people went out to fish in the morning they’d stick a dollar on the ceiling. If they didn’t catch anything at least they’d still have enough money for a drink.
Kenai Fjord Tour
A trip highlight was the boat ride out of Seward to get close to a glacier. The rest of the pics and videos are all from the ride
The little white things in the third pic are some sort of harbor sealSea lion..,Cannonball!
Here’s the Glacier! There’s a Momma Otter floating on her back. I think she’s carrying a cub. On the broken off ice there’s a bunch of sea lions chilling in the last picCalving Video 1 (has sound)
Calving Video 2 (has sound)
(Long Video). There was a young male Humpback playing on the shore
This is the Humpback “bubbling”. The whale will surround fish with a wall of bubbles that the fish won’t go through then the whale comes up from underneath to snack. The guide said that in the south the whales have learned to team up to do this and that knowledge is slowly going north
(Slightly long). One final encounter on our way home. A pod of Orcas came by to check out the boat!
